LANSING – Surrounded by family, friends and supporters, State Rep. Andy Coulouris (D-Saginaw) today was sworn in to his first term in the Michigan House of Representatives during a ceremony at the State Capitol. Today marks the first day of the 94th Legislature, in which Democrats control the House of Representatives for the first time since 1998.
"The people of Michigan made their voices heard in November when they called out for change," said Coulouris, who represents the 95th House District. "I will work with my colleagues to create a Legislature that truly represents and works for our residents. I will fight to build a brighter future for Saginaw and for the entire state of Michigan."
After the swearing-in ceremony, Coulouris and his fellow House Democrats wasted no time getting to work, introducing measures that will end drug industry immunity and reduce the influx of Canadian and out-of-state trash flowing into Michigan.
House Democrats introduced a proposal to repeal a 1996 law that gives big drug companies immunity when their products harm or kill our residents; the repeal would be retroactive to 1996. The plan also adds drug companies to the Consumer Protection Act, from which they currently are exempt.
"When the big drug companies sell products that harm or kill, they should be held accountable," Coulouris said. "That doesn't happen in Michigan. I will fight to protect our residents and ensure that drug companies are held accountable when their products cause harm or death."
During his first term, Coulouris plans to focus on improving health care in Michigan and strengthening our state's cities.
